  1. Monaco has been an independent principality for over 300 years. 
  2. It has been controlled by the House of Grimaldi since 1297,
  3. except for during the French Revolution when it was placed under
  4. the protection of Sardinia.  The Prince of Monaco was an absolute
  5. ruler until a 1911 constitution was enacted.  Monaco is noted for
  6. its mild climate and impressive scenery.  Much of the country has
  7. been extended by land reclamation.                    @
